Fencer Sam Catantan vowed to come back stronger and make every day count toward her redemption bid for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

For now, the 22-year-old Penn State standout is focusing on her wellness as she gives herself ample time to heal and rest.

Catantan impressed in her first match in Paris, outlasting world No. 65 Mariana Pistoia (15-13) of Brazil before giving Italian veteran and FIE ranked No. 2 Arianna Errigo a huge scare, 13-15, in the women’s individual foil event.

“Forever proud Pinay, forever an Olympian,” Catantan penned on her social media account. “I still can't believe how this became possible at such an unexpected time. This is an experience I will never forget for the rest of my life.” 

“None of this would have been possible without the help and support of so many amazing people in my life,” she added.

With her superb showing in the French capital, Catantan soared from 266th to 87th in the world rankings.

“To the entire fencing community in the Philippines, my teammates, friends, doctors, physical therapists, coaches, and family: from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for your unending love and support,” she added.

Up against the Italian star, Catantan tore her ACL anew and ultimately absorbed a slim loss despite her gallant efforts.

“This sport has given me the best the world could offer, bringing me a unique joy whenever I am on the strip fencing for the Philippines. However, sometimes things may not go as planned,” she continued.

“Unfortunately, I re-tore my ACL and need to take some time off the strip again. Despite this, I feel beyond blessed and grateful for all His grace,” she added.

But Catantan believed that there is one thing that is sure: she will be back again, this time in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

“I know I can do it and I will do it again. This journey is far from over, but we've come a long way. Patuloy na lalaban para sa pangarap!” she concluded.
