Following Carlos Yulo’s triumphant campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics—becoming the Philippines’ first double-gold medalist—Speaker Martin Romualdez admitted that it would now be difficult to invite the phenom gymnast to the House of Representatives.
In short, the Philippines' "Golden Boy" is going to be very “in-demand” from now on.
“Of course he will be recognized pero siguro magiging busy siya ngayon kasi masyado na siguro siyang ma-i-in-demand (but maybe he will be busy now because he might be in-demand),” Romualdez said in an ambush interview on Monday, August 5.
“You see, when these achievements are attained, these personalties really nagiging role model talaga sila, nagiging inspirasyon (become role models, they become inspiration),” he explained.
On Saturday and Sunday evening (Manila time), Yulo achieved greatness by topping the floor exercise and vault events, respectively, in men’s artistic gymnastics.
Yulo’s success, according to Romualdez, is a victory that makes every Filipino proud.
“Kaya malaking karangalan ang dinadala ng mga atleta natin sa Pilipinas at nakikita naman talaga world-class, maski ngayon sa medal count number one na tayo sa ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations),” the Speaker noted.
(Our athletes are bringing great honor to the Philippines and we can see that they are truly world-class, even now in the medal count we are number one in ASEAN.)
“Hindi lang pala sa ating ekonomiya, GDP (gross domestic product), pero sa sports kaya tuwang-tuwa lahat talaga,” he quipped.
(Not only in our economy, GDP, but in sports, so everyone is really happy.)
As of this posting, the Philippines is still the only country in Southeast Asia to have won medals in the Paris games.
Romualdez pointed out that the likes of Yulo should serve as role models, particularly in sports and health, to inspire the youth.
“Para may positive reinforcement sa lahat ng sakripisyo nila, sa lahat ng ginastos nila, para makabawi naman,” he continued.
(So that there will be positive reinforcement for all their sacrifices and for all they've spent, this will make up for it.)
