Senators are now seeking the conferment of the Senate Medal of Excellence to Carlos Yulo for clinching two gold medals in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France have been filed in the Senate.
So far, four senators have filed separate resolutions seeking the conferment of the prestigious “Senate Medal of Excellence” for the Filipino gymnast, the first in the history for Philippine Gymnastics.
The Senate Medal of Excellence is the highest expression of national appreciation for his outstanding achievement of being the first-ever Filipino athlete to win two gold medals in the Olympics.
“Yulo’s outstanding achievement at the world’s biggest sporting event should be celebrated by the entire nation as it is a testament to the excellent skill and unyielding spirit of the Filipinos. His glorious success is a shining example of what hard work, discipline, perseverance, and commitment to excellence can accomplish,” Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada said in his Senate Resolution No. 1103.
Dubbed as the “Golden Boy,” Yulo won the Asian championship ten times and the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games nine times; he is also the second Filipino to ever win an Olympic gold medal, after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Furthermore, the 24-year old decorated gymnast is the first Filipino athlete to win multiple medals in a single Summer Games appearance, Estrada noted.
“Yulo cemented himself as one of the most successful and accomplished athletes in Philippine sports, rightfully earning his spot in the pantheon of the nation’s greatest sports heroes,” said Estrada.
In filing his own Senate Resolution No. 1105, Sen. Joel Villanueva said Yulo has made the country proud for his record-breaking achievements at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
“His world-class talent, unwavering determination and commitment to excellence, and masterful performance merit the highest recognition from this august chamber,” Villanueva stressed.
Sen. Francis Tolentino also filed a separate resolution, Senate Resolution No. 1106, seeking the same commendation for Yulo whom he said, brought honor and prestige to the Philippines and served as an inspiration to the Filipino people.
Sen. Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri said he believes Yulo will have no difficulty getting the support of senators as he "truly deserves the Senate and the Filipino people's recognition for accomplishing such as magnificent feat" in winning two gold medals in the Olympics.
"With the Senate Medal of Excellence, we are recognizing Caloy not just for his extraordinary skill and talent, but also for his patriotism. This is our way of thanking him for proudly carrying our flag and showing the world the heart and spirit of the Filipino people,” said Zubiri in filing his Senate Resolution No. 1108.
Zubiri also said that with Yulo’s historic Olympic victories, he has become “one of the greatest Filipino athletes of all time.”
