Poe notes dip in text scams after POGO raids; cites need for law on total ban

Senator Grace Poe noted on Monday, August 5, the decrease in text scams when President Marcos ordered the ban of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), raising the need for legislation for the latter.
"From that time on actually a little before that time until the present, kung mapapansin ninyo, wala nang masyadong nagte—text scam sa inyo ngayon ng mga nanalo kayo ng ganitong jackpot o kaya yung package ninyo, kailangan i-redeem ninyo, ganito-ganyan (From that time on actually a little before that time until the present, if you would notice, there's only a handful of text scams telling you that you won the jackpot, or you have a package that needs to be redeemed and whatnot)," she said in a brief manifestation during the plenary session.
"So nangangahulugan lamang na malaki ang kinalaman nitong mga nag-ooperate ng mga illegal na POGOs sa ating bansa (This just means that these illegal POGOs operating in the country have a lot do with it)," she added.
Poe mentioned that perhaps there's a correlation between those scammers and those POGOs that were raided just recently.
She added that the President's words that legal and illegal POGOs are no longer allowed somehow made a big impact at least when it comes to these scams that we are receiving.
"Now, that's not to say that this will finally be over forever. There will probably still be other scammers that will try to fool our countrymen, but at least this is a large step forward," she said.
"So I think it will be also wise for us to have legislation to finally pass the banning, to finally make it in writing, make it a law that no legal or illegal POGOs will be allowed and other online platforms that will be harmful to our countrymen," she added.
Meanwhile, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said that POGOs operated merely through licenses issued by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) and by merely withdrawing those licenses, they can abide by the President's directive against all POGOs.
"So, pinakamahalaga at pinakakagyat, Mr. President, kanselahin lang ng PAGCOR ang mga lisensyang dati nilang in-issue sa mga POGO bilang pagtalima, bilang pagsunod sa utos ni Presidente na i-ban ng mga POGO (So what's important and urgent, Mr. President, is for Pagcor to cancel the licenses they issued to POGOs before as part of following the directive of the President to ban POGOs)," she added.
