The Philippines stands as the best performing Southeast Asian nation so far in the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics -- big thanks to Carlos Yulo’s two-gold medal haul in men’s artistic gymnastics over the weekend.

As of 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, only three SEA countries have only breached the medal tally with Team PH accounting for two gold medals from Yulo’s victories in the floor exercise and vault apparatus for a share of 21st place.
Indonesia and Malaysia, meanwhile, are tied at 61st with one bronze medal apiece, both from badminton.
Gregoria Mariska Tunjung finished at the podium for Indonesia in women’s singles, while Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik finished third in the men’s doubles for Malaysia.
Other SEA countries -- Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam -- have yet to earn a medal although more sports are still being contested so far and more have yet to start.
Meanwhile, aside from the two gold medals, the PH team is already assured of at least two bronze medals as Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio booked themselves semifinal berths in their respective boxing events.
Also competing for Team PH are world No. 2 pole vaulter EJ Obiena and hurdlers Lauren Hoffmann and John Cabang Tolentino.
Golfers Dottie Ardina and Bianca Pagdanganan open their campaigns on Wednesday, Aug. 7, even as weightlifting competitions where John Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno and Elreen Ando are part of, also start on the same day.
