Mayor Honey on Yulo's gold medal win: 'Manila is proud of you'

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan congratulated 2024 Outstanding Manileño awardee Carlos Edriel Yulo after taking home the gold medal in the men’s gymnastics floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics 2024 on Saturday night, Aug. 3.
"Our hearts leaped in our chests as Caloy leaped high in the air. We stomped our feet on the floor as Caloy nailed those solid landings that felt like earthquakes. Our eyes glowed in admiration as Caloy showed sure control as he executed that perfect handstand," the mayor said.

"We sang along as Caloy sang the Philippine National Anthem. Tears welled up in our eyes and flowed in streams on our faces as the Philippine Flag rose in Paris. As Carlos cried tears of utter joy, we cried too," she added.
Lacuna-Pangan also said that a hero’s welcome will be held for Yulo and that he will be given an award from the city government.
Last month, Yulo was hailed as an “Outstanding Manilan” during the celebration of the city's 453rd founding anniversary.
The “Gawad Manileño Award” was personally handed by the mayor, Vice Mayor John Marvin “Yul Servo” Nieto, and Manila Sports Council (MASCO) head Roel de Guznan.
"A resident of Malate, Manila, Yulo has brought pride and glory to the country and most especially to his fellow Manilans. The City of Manila is so proud of you!” the mayor said.
Nieto said that the Manila City Council, of which he is the presiding officer, is also gearing up to bestow on Yulo the recognition he deserves.
Yulo and his brother, Karl Edrew, were earlier feted by the MCC through a resolution authored by Councilor Numero Lim and Majority Floor leader Atty. Ernesto Isip Jr. for having excelled in the Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championship held in Uzbekistan on May 19, 2024.
Yulo is the second Filipino athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympics following weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who brought the country’s first gold medal during the 2021 edition of the Games in Tokyo.
Yulo is a two-time world champion and multiple Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games gold medal winner.
The city government said that his father reported that Yulo's achievement was the result of his four years of preparation.
"I’m so overwhelmed. I’m feeling grateful for having this medal and for God. He protected me, as always... He gave me the strength to get through this kind of performance and perform this well,” Yulo said after winning.
