Aftershocks from 6.8-magnitude Surigao del Sur quake reach 800

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded over 800 aftershocks following the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck offshore of Surigao del Sur on Aug. 3.

As of 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, Phivolcs’ seismic station in Bislig City had detected 812 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.2 to 6.2

Of the recorded earthquakes, 286 earthquakes have been plotted by three or more stations, while only two tremors were felt.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at 6:22 a.m. on Aug. 3.

The epicenter of the strong earthquake was located 83 kilometers northeast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur, and it occurred 4 kilometers beneath the epicenter.
