Blueprint for developing leaders in optometry

A guide to achieving success in your career

What if your time at university could shape not only your career but also your life’s mission? For Dr. Hoy-Sun Shin, Centro Escolar University (CEU) was that transformative place. Her journey from a determined student to a global leader in optometry exemplifies how a school can profoundly influence its students, equipping them with tools to develop their potential, beyond what they ever imagined.

Dr. Shin’s journey began in 1998 when she pursued her Doctor of Optometry degree. The program offered more than just academic knowledge—It provided a comprehensive learning experience designed to prepare students for real-world challenges. “My education nurtured me with the wisdom and resilience to overcome tough matters and situations,” Dr. Shin reflects. These foundational lessons were crucial as she navigated the complexities of studying in a new country, including overcoming language barriers and adjusting to an unfamiliar academic environment.

Beyond the books: Hands-on learning

During her time at the university, Dr. Shin thrived in clinical subjects, gaining hands-on experience through practical engagements like conducting eye exams in various communities. “When I visited villages and met many people, I realized there were many unfortunate people. It was carved in my heart that I must serve people,” she shares. The opportunity to interact directly with patients and provide vision and eye care services to underserved communities left a lasting impact on her, instilling a deep sense of purpose and commitment to her field.

Graduating in 2002 marked the beginning of an extraordinary path for Dr. Shin. With a strong foundation from her education, she pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health and began her advanced academic career at Dongwon Institute of Science & Technology. Her rigorous training and compassionate service were instrumental in her subsequent achievements. They provided not only technical skills needed for her profession but also an ethical framework and resilience guiding her through a distinguished career.

Dr. Shin’s dedication and expertise led her to earn the esteemed title of Board Certified Academic Fellow from the International Examination and Certification Board (IECB) of the Optometric Vision Development and Rehabilitation Association (OVDRA) in Aurora, USA. This accolade reflects her exceptional contributions to vision development and rehabilitation.

In 2014, Dr. Shin took a bold step by establishing the OVDRA International Chapter in Korea. Under her leadership, this non-profit organization has made a significant impact, providing vital vision care services to students with learning difficulties and low vision. Her initiative has expanded access to vision therapy across multiple regions in Korea, supported by government funding. “My professors encouraged me to discover the best solutions on my own, rather than simply providing the answers. They taught me that in real-life situations, solutions are not always predetermined—they depend on how we approach the challenges we face. Had I only sought predefined answers and clear paths, I might never have embraced the difficulties necessary for growth. This mindset empowered me to establish the first International Chapter of OVDRA, confident in my ability to pave new ways.”

Continuing the Mission: Ongoing Contributions and Achievements

Dr. Shin continues to shape the field of optometry through annual training programs and numerous publications, reaching over 4,000 individuals each year. Her story is a powerful reminder of how education can offer more than knowledge—it can lay a foundation for a lifetime of impact and growth. “I believe that education is not just about providing knowledge but also about creating the circumstances and opportunities to experience and expand our own potential.”

In advising current students, Dr. Shin shares a heartfelt message: “Listen to the professors! They have the wisdom to guide you to grow your potential. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and fail. Those are your best experiences, and you will grow from them.”

Dr. Hoy-Sun Shin’s path from university to becoming a leading figure in optometry illustrates the remarkable impact an education can have on its students. The programs and nurturing environment she experienced in CEU provided her with the knowledge, values, and resilience necessary to turn her potential into meaningful achievements. Her story highlights the University's philosophy of Ciencia y Virtud (Science and Virtue), a commitment to excellence and desirable values in the profession, driving meaningful change in society.
