It could have been sweeter for the national team after Yulo's splendid performance, but Paalam, who is eyeing to assure himself with at least a bronze medal, was dealt with a painful loss against the Aussie boxer after three rounds of tireless action.

With the defeat, he became the third Filipino boxer to exit the Games after early defeats of Eumir Marcial and Hergie Bacyadan.

Still in contention for the Filipino pugs are Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, both in women’s class.

Prior to his quarterfinals loss, the Tokyo silver medalist received an opening round bye then scored a unanimous decision victory over Ireland’s Jude Gallagher (5-0) in the Round of 16.
