BUTUAN CITY – Surigao del Sur is on alert after a magnitude-6.8 earthquake rocked the province in the Caraga region on Saturday morning, August 3.

The Office of Civil Defense-13 and Surigao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council are monitoring reports from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (MDRRMCs) about damage caused by the tremor.
Surigao del Sur Gov. Alexander “Ayec” T. Pimentel has deployed the PDRRMC to check residents, particularly those living in coastal areas.
No damage was reported from the earthquake as of posting time.
The earthquake was also felt in the provinces of Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Agusan del Norte and this city, the capital of Butuan.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the earthquake at 6:23 a.m. and its epicenter was 67 kilometers east of Lingig town, Surigao del Sur.
The earthquake had a shallow depth of 10 kms, Phivolcs said.
Intensity V was registered at the town proper of Lingig and nearby Hinatuan and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur; Rosario, Agusan del Sur; and Maco and Monkayo, Davao de Oro; Intensity IV in Nabunturan town, Davao del Oro and Davao City; Intensity III in Don Marcelino, Davao Oriental; Inabanga, Bohol; and Baybay City, Leyte; and Intensity II in Mambajao, Camiguin; Sogod, Southern Leyte; Cotabato City, and Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao province.
In its instrumental intensities, Phivolcs said the tremor was Intensity IV in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Intensity III in Abuyog, Leyte; Digos City, Davao del Sur; Malungon, Sarangani, and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur; Intensity II in Cebu City, Carigara and Dulag, Leyte; Sogod, Southern Leyte; Kadingilan, Kalilangan, City of Malaybalay, and San Fernando, Bukidnon; Balingasag, Misamis Oriental; Cagayan de Oro City; Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Banisilan, City of Kidapawan, and Magpet, Cotabato; Glan, Sarangani; City of Koronadal, and Tampakan, South Cotabato; and Intensity I in Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; Alangalang, Albuera, and Kananga, Leyte; San Roque, Northern Samar; City of Catbalogan, Samar; Molave, Zamboanga del Sur; Malitbog, Bukidnon; Carmen, and President Roxas, Cotabato; Kiamba, Sarangani; Norala, and Surallah, South Cotabato.
Phivolcs is expecting aftershocks from this tectonic earthquake.
An aftershock measuring magnitude-6.2 earthquake rattled Surigao del Sur hours later.
Pimentel said the tremor did not cause any harm to residents or major damage to properties.
“Salamat lang jud sa Ginoon nga walay nasakitan” (Thanks God that no one was hurt),” he said.
The earthquake was also felt in the region.
Phivolcs recorded the earthquake at 12:20 p.m. and its epicenter was 84 kms northeast of Lingig with a shallow depth of two kms.
