Octogenarian American drowns in Sipalay City beach


BACOLOD CITY – An American drowned in a beach in Barangay 2, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental on Wednesday, August 28.

The 86-year-old victim was a resident of Kansas and temporarily residing in a resort in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Police Capt. Jose Michael Muñez, deputy chief of the Sipalay City Police Station, said the victim and his friend visited Sipalay and had lunch at the beach front. 

The victim went swimming but he drowned due to huge waves, Muñez said. 

His friend tried to help him but failed. The victim was declared dead in a hospital.

Police are getting in touch with victim’s family through his friend to enable them to claim his remains.

Rescued

Two fishermen stranded for hours at sea after their boat encountered engine trouble were rescued in the sea of Dumangas, Iloilo on Wednesday.

Rescued were Roland Dominguez and Alfredo Vitar, residents of Bago City, Negros Occidental.

Commander Jansen Benjamin, head of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-northern Negros Occidental, said they went fishing on Tuesday night, August 27, in the sea of Guimaras and Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.  

They were supposed to return by 3 a.m. on Wednesday but their boat stalled and drifted.

Their families sought assistance from the PCG after they failed to return home. 

A fishing boat sighted them in the sea of Dumangas and rescued them and towed their boat back to this city.

They arrived home at 8 p.m.
