BTS selected as No. 1 best national singer of 21st century in South Korea


Grammy-nominated K-pop group BTS won the title Best National Singer/Group of the 21st century in South Korea. 

Polling firm Gallup Korea conducted a survey from Aug. 19 to 23 among 1,052 respondents aged 19 to 69 nationwide in South Korea, commissioned by Korean media outlet Star News for its 20th anniversary.

Respondents were asked “Among the following singers/groups, who do you think is the best national singer/group?” 

BTS emerged as No. 1 in the survey with 43 percent. 

According to Gallup Korea, "The unprecedented achievement in K-pop history is reflected in the survey results. BTS received even support from gender, age, region, and occupation, living up to the title of 'national group.’" 

Among age groups, BTS received the highest support from 19-29 (44 percent), those in their 30s (39 percent), and those in their 40s (53 percent), according to Star News. 

Placing second is singer Cho Yong-pil with 33 percent followed by IU with 19 percent, who got high votes among the respondents aged 19-29 (39 percent) and those in their 30s (22 percent).

Trot Singer Lim Young-woong is No. 4 with 18 percent followed by Na Hoon-a (No. 5, 17 percent), BLACKPINK (No. 6, nine percent),  Lee Mi-ja (No. 7, seven percent), Seo Taji, Girls’ Generation and g.o.d (all No. 8, six percent). 

Big Bang placed 11th with five percent followed by Nam Jin, Lee Seung-chul, Kim Gun-mo, Shin Seung-hoon, Lee Hyo-ri, and H.O.T. (all 12th place, four percent), Wonder Girls (18th place, two percent), and Rain and Roo’ra (one percent) and others (two percent) in 19th place.
