Peace and justice: Caritas Philippines voices 'deep concern' over Davao tensions
Caritas Philippines, the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), on Wednesday, Aug. 28, expressed “deep concern” regarding the recent developments in the ongoing search for Pastor Apollo Quiboloy in Davao City.
“We condemn the violence and the unrest that have marred the authorities' attempt to serve justice,” Caritas Philippines President Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo said in a statement.
“These events remind us that the pursuit of truth and justice must never be at the expense of human life and dignity,” he added.
Caritas Philippines noted that the clashes between law enforcement and members of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC)—which have resulted in injuries and the tragic death of a KOJC member—underscore the “urgent need for a peaceful and just resolution.”
In this context, Caritas Philippines renewed its call for Quiboloy to “heed the due process of law” and fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations.
“Evasion of arrest or delay of justice merely prolongs the pain and suffering of the victims who have bravely come forward,” Bagaforo said.
He added that it is crucial for Quiboloy and his supporters to “respect the rule of law and allow the legal process to take its due course without interference.”
Meanwhile, Caritas Philippines urged law enforcement to “exercise maximum restraint” and continue observing due process and human rights.
“We recognize the difficult task faced by our law enforcement personnel, but it is essential that they conduct their operations with care, ensuring the safety and dignity of everyone involved,” Bagaforo said.
The organization also renewed its appeal to all those involved: “No one is above the law, and justice must prevail, not through violence, but through adherence to the rule of law and respect for human dignity,” Bagaforo added.
