1 ship crew dies, 2 hurt in Tondo pier explosion

A ship crew died while two others were injured in an explosion inside a ship docked at the North Harbor Port in Tondo, Manila on Tuesday, August 27.

Police said Timothy James Lumagui died on the spot while his two colleagues, identified as Lowie Belen and Alfred de Leon, sustained third-degree burns and were brought to a hospital for treatment.

According to the investigation conducted by the Manila Police District (MPD) and the Philippine Ports Authority, the incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. on the second deck of the docked MV Everwin Star 2 at Vitas Pier 18.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is still determining the possible cause of the explosion one of which could be the explosion of the LPG tank inside the ship.

Meanwhile, the MPD and BFP said the incident remains under investigation.
