PAGASA warns of heavy rains due to ‘habagat’

A typhoon with the international name “Shanshan” is not expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility but it may influence weather conditions over the next two days, potentially triggering monsoon rains over parts of the country.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 11 p.m. advisory on Tuesday, Aug. 27, the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) may affect the western parts of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Western Visayas.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, heavy to intense rainfall (100-200 millimeters) may affect Bataan and Occidental Mindoro, while moderate to heavy rains (50-100 millimeters) may prevail over Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Palawan, Romblon, Guimaras, Antique, Aklan, and Negros Occidental.

By Thursday, Aug. 29, moderate to heavy rainfall may persist in Bataan, Cavite, northern Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique, and Negros Occidental.

PAGASA warned that these conditions could lead to flooding and rain-induced landslides, particularly in areas identified as highly or very highly susceptible to such hazards on hazard maps, and in regions with significant prior rainfall.

The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices are urged to take all necessary precautions to protect lives and property.
