Scotty Hopson sinks game-winning four as Converge nips TNT

A four-point game-winner. 

In the distant past no one would ever imagine a scenario where a team can win a game by drilling a shot from beyond 27-feet that is credited for four points. But there’s always a first time for everything.

Scotty Hopson capped a huge comeback with a clutch fadeaway four-pointer with four seconds left as Converge came through with a pulsating 96-95 victory over TNT in the Group A of the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The high-scoring FiberXers import found his spot at the right wing and drilled a tough four-pointer over the outstretched arms of Glenn Khobuntin to complete a comeback from 16-points down for Converge.

Hopson finished with 32 points spiked by two fours as he showed the way for the FiberXers who got back on the winning track after losing the last game and improved to a 2-1 record.

The former NBA player added 10 rebounds while Schonny Winston and Justin Arana added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The FiberXers fell behind by as many as 16 points, 56-40, in the first half but slowly got their bearings in the last two quarters behind the efforts of Hopson, Arana and Winston.

It was even a tight contest toward the end with Alex Cabagnot putting Converge ahead, 92-91, with an and-1 play with 39 seconds left. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson responded with four straight free throws to get the lead back for TNT, 95-92.

With the game on the line, Hopson then showed nerves of steel and drilled the go-ahead four much to the delight of a rare but good-sized Tuesday crowd at the Big Dome.

Hollis-Jefferson paced TNT with 32 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks while Calvin Oftana chopped in 22 points and 10 rebounds. Their efforts , however, went futile in the end as the Tropang Giga absorbed their first taste of defeat through three games.
