Getaway vehicle in San Carlos City mall robbery tracked in Batangas City

BACOLOD CITY – A getaway vehicle used by unidentified persons in a mall robbery in Barangay Palampas, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental last week was last seen in Batangas City.

Police acquired closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera that enabled them to identify the getaway car as a white Mitsubishi Montero.

In a press briefing over the weekend, Police Lt. Col. Nazer Canja, San Carlos City police chief, presented photos of the suspects and the getaway car captured from a CCTV camera footage.

Police coordinated with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and identified the first and last owners of the vehicle that would aid them in the ongoing investigation. 

They collaborated with other agencies and police stations to determine the whereabouts of the suspects.

Based on their investigation and CCTV evidence, Canja said that at least five individuals were involved in the incident, including three accomplices.

The group recognized as Cebuano- or Hiligaynon-speaking individuals rented a cottage in an inn in Barangay Macapso, Vallehermoso town, Negros Oriental, before committing the crime, he added. 

Canja said that two suspects, who were wearing bonnets, ransacked four establishments in the city's largest mall, carting away P1.4-million worth of cash, pieces of jewelry, and tools on Monday night, August 19.

The suspects entered the mall and exited through a 372-meter tunnel adjacent to a building on C.L. Ledesma Ave. with three accomplices waiting for them nearby, he added. The incident was discovered on Tuesday morning, August 20, when employees arrived for work.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Canja was formed to probe the case. Mayor Renato Gustilo has earlier offered P100,000 cash reward for any information that would aid authorities in arresting the suspects.

Canja appealed to the public to reach out and help police solve the case.

He urged the mall to step up security measures as the robbery was the second incident in the establishment this year, the first was during the Holy Week last March where P450,000 worth of gadgets were taken away.
