Rain or Shine aims to give Barangay Ginebra’s new additions a rude welcome when it guns for win No. 2 in the first out-of-town game of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup at the Candon Arena in Ilocos Sur on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The Elasto Painters are aiming for the early lead in the Group B standings in the 6 p.m. affair where the Kings are also expected to parade their newest weapons in rookie RJ Abarrientos, and acquisitions Stephen Holt and Isaac Go.
Rain or Shine, however, is already in the groove of things especially after a rousing 110-97 victory over Blackwater with import Aaron Fuller and rookies Felix Lemetti and Caelan Tiongson leading the charge.
Fuller looked to be tailor-fit to head coach Yeng Guiao’s system after dropping 24 points and 19 rebounds although he is set to be pitted against Ginebra’s resident import Justin Brownlee who is coming off a splendid showing with Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia and a championship with Pelita Jaya in the Indonesian league.
Of course, Brownlee is a proven winner in the PBA stage although he should be extra motivated in this year’s Governors’ Cup after the Kings finished as bridesmaid to the TNT Tropang Giga in the last edition in Season 47.
It will also be Brownlee’s return to the PBA after a long layoff as he was not fielded by Ginebra during the last season’s Commissioner’s Cup owing to his sanction with FIBA and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) last year.
While Brownlee is not expected to have his usual supporting cast with Scottie Thompson, Jamie Malonzo and Jeremiah Gray still out with injuries, he is still primed to have a potent crew around him with last season’s Rookie of the Year in Holt and third overall pick Abarrientos running the show at the guard spots.
The two impressed in their exhibition match against New Taipei Kings in Macao and should be even better right now as they get accustomed to head coach Tim Cone’s triangle offense.
Ginebra’s new backcourt tandem, however, is facing a feisty and defense oriented counterpart at Rain or Shine, featuring Gian Mamuyac and Adrian Nocum. Of course, guys like Anton Asistio and Andrei Caracut are poised to anchor the Elasto Painters’ run-and-gun scheme alongside sweet-shooting bigs in Leonard Santillan and Keith Datu.
