Brazil supports teaching of Portuguese in PH

Portuguese language may soon be taught in the Philippines.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira on Friday, August 23, signed the Agreement on Educational Cooperation, which is aimed at enhancing bilateral exchanges between academic and technical institutions of both countries.

This came as Manalo met Vieira in Manila for talks that included various cooperation between Manila and Brasilia.

According to DFA, the two diplomats underscored the importance of strengthening educational, cultural, and scientific cooperation, based on both countries' aspirations for robust academic exchange.

"In this context, Minister Vieira announced Brazil's initiative to support Portuguese language teaching in the Philippines," DFA said.

Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. It is also spoken in Portugal and in several African and Asian countries, such as Mozambique, Angola and Timor-Leste.

The Agreement on Educational Cooperation was only one of the two agreements that the two officials signed.

Manalo and Vieira also inked the Philippines-Brazil Framework Agreement on Technical Cooperation. Its details are yet to be shared by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
