The Commission on Elections (Comelec) conducted a mass registration on Saturday, Aug. 24, for a total of 369 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) detained at the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory (MCJMD).
Jail Supt. Lino Soriano, warden of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Manila City Jail, said the initiative aims to increase the number of registered voters among the PDL population, ensuring that they can participate in the upcoming election.
He cited that the PDLs should be provided with the opportunity to register as official voters, allowing them to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections despite being confined in the facility.
“Comelec officials from Manila's Districts 1 to 6 were present to meticulously assess and process the qualifications of the PDL for voter registration,’’ the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory noted.
As a result, Soriano stated that some PDLs were able to transfer their voter registration to their current district, while others were able to reactivate their registration.
