Should it be spelled as one word, or two, or two with a hyphen?
Whichever, pay day is a working national holiday which happens on the 15th or 30th, or 10th and 25th, according to an employer’s choice. Unfortunately, it is also the day when bills need to be paid or collected, and there’s no escape.
All the truth you need to know about income is this irrefutable law of the universe: Expenses grow to meet rising income.
For many of us who continue to struggle to save and own a car and/or a house, not necessarily in that order, a regular monthly income would need a blood transfusion to make life easier. Until we turn on the TV and watch how our playful TV entertainers knock on someone’s door or pulls aside a curtained wall to enter the abode of the day’s lucky jackpot winner, we haven’t seen how imaginative some residences can be!
We were watching such a noontime show when our ‘Cook’ commented that her sister and her family of five were living in a room “as big as this one,” meaning one of three bedrooms in our house that’s as old as the duhat tree in the garden. This room is large enough to be someone’s home?
Yes, Cook said, her sister’s family – a couple with three children – are lucky, even if the monthly rental comes up to ₱4,500 (Marikina rates), because “it’s not just a room, it’s their kitchen, bedroom, living room,” etc. From the time Cook started working for us, she has been sending money to her family in the Visayas, and now they own a three-story building, thanks to Cook. For the last two years, she has been sending additional cash for her sister to put up a sari-sari store, from which to gain income for their expenses.
“Good for you!”, I told her. “I’m your boss and I don’t own a three-story building!”
The institutional dream of owning a car and then a house has not waned among professional newbies since my school days. These days car makers offer deals of every kind, without mentioning inflation, insurance, maintenance, taxes, etc. As long as that dream keeps us going, body, heart and soul, the journey’s worth the ride.
