Capiz under state of calamity due to dengue outbreak


ILOILO CITY – The province of Capiz is under a state of calamity due to a dengue outbreak.

 The Capiz Provincial Board approved the recommendation of the Capiz Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council chaired by Gov. Fredenil Castro who announced the measure in an emergency meeting on Thursday, August 22.

The Capiz Provincial Health Office recorded 1,783 dengue cases and five deaths from January 1 to August 17.

Provincial health officer Dr. Alex Nolasco said the figure is a 280 percent increase compared to the same period of last year with only 470 cases.

Nolasco noted that 120 barangays have clustering of dengue cases. These areas have three or more cases for four consecutive weeks.

The capital of Roxas City has the highest number of dengue cases with 600, followed by Dumarao with 153, 140 in Mambusao, 145 in Sigma, and Panit-an with 107.

The provincial government has intensified its anti-dengue campaign, implementing fogging operations in areas that are likely breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
