If House Deputy Majority Leader Iloilo 1st district Rep. Janette Garin will have her way, she would seek accountability from so-called "bad marites" as health authorities grapple with the emergence of monkeypox (mpox) in the country.

Garin, a former Department of Health (DOH) secretary warned against discrimination among Filipinos over the possible spread of mpox.

In this regard, she said there should be "accountability for bad marites". "Their presence can hinder early detection [of mpox]," noted Garin.

"Marites" is a colloquial term for gossipers. More often than not, they are linked to the spread of lies.

"It’s very important to caution against stigma and discrimination," the House official underscored.

"Sa ngayon, napaka-importante ang tulong-tulong na pagmamasid at suporta. Kaakibat din dito yung paulit-ulit na pagpapaalala ng mga sintomas at maagang pagpapakonsulta para maagapan ang komplikasyon at maiwasan ang spread ng virus na ito," Garin said.

(Right now, it's very important to help each other in terms of vigilance and support. This is also in line with our repeated reminders on watching out for symptoms and early consultation in order to avoid complications and the spread of this virus.)
