Top cue artists Johann Chua, Lee Vann Corteza and Carlo Biado won their respective preliminary assignments in the 2024 US 9-Ball Open Championship at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey Tuesday, Aug. 20 (Manila time).

Still reeling from his Euro Open bridesmaid finish, Chua earned an early bye then dismantled Vietnam’s Dang Thanh Kien (9-1) to move one win away from a Round of 64 spot of the six-day competition which has a $300,000 or P16 million prize pool.
Chua will next battle Taiwanese Liu Ri Teng in the tournament that gathered 256 elite billiard players from across the world.
The 2023 World Cup of Pool winner almost captured the Euro title and the $30,000 (roughly P1.7 million) grand prize but lost steam against Denmark’s Mickey Krause, 13-8, in the finals.
Chua outlasted many top bets in the said event including multiple world champion American Shane Van Boening and Albanian Kledio Kaci.
On the other hand, Corteza toppled American Mike Dechaine (9-3) and Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Dan (9-4). He will face Japanese Nayuki Oi next.
Biado hardly broke a sweat, receiving a bye and crushed USA’s Robert Hart, 9-1, to set up a match against UK’s Chris Melling.
Other Filipino bets were also victorious in Michael Baoanan, Marvin Asis, Jeffrey Ignacio, Jefrey Roda and Hong Kong-based Robbie Capito.
