Anti-corruption group backs Mayors Sotto, Teodoro, Treñas amid allegations of graft

A group batting for good governance on Wednesday, August 21, expressed its support to two of its convenors, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro, as well as Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas following the series of alleged graft cases filed against them with the Ombudsman.

Sotto currently faces graft complaints over his alleged failure to distribute cash allowances to Pasig City Hall employees and accusations of granting illegal discounts to a telecommunications provider.

Mayor Teodoro has been accused of technical malversation in connection with the alleged misuse of PhilHealth fund.

Meanwhile, Mayor Trenas faces grave misconduct charges before the Office of the Ombudsman concerning the demolition of the historic Iloilo City public market.

According to the Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG), the said charges are allegedly "politically motivated" aimed at tarnishing the executives' names and reputations ahead of the 2025 elections.

"The complaints filed against them with the Ombudsman are an opportunity for the truth to come out and for their names to be cleared. However, we cannot disregard the possibility that these actions are politically motivated, especially with the filing of candidacies for the 2025 elections approaching," M4GG said.

"As a movement that advocates for good governance and the fight against corruption, we always prioritize transparency and accountability. These three mayors have demonstrated and continue to embody these principles. We hope that the investigation will be fair and that, in the end, what is right and just will prevail," it added.
