The victory improved the Solar Spikers to a 5-3 win-loss record to temporarily reside at sixth place, boosting their campaign heading to the crucial quarterfinal phase that will start on Saturday, Aug. 24.
As expected, import Marina Tushova carried the fight for Capital1 throughout the affair with another impressive effort of 35 points including 31 attacks, but Des Clemente and skipper Jorelle Singh were there to provide enough ammunition to sustain their charge.
Clemente threatened in the attack line and fired 11 kills to finish with 14 points, while Singh chipped in 10 points.
Setter Iris Tolenada was also responsible for their hard-hitting offense by converting 24 excellent sets, while rookie Leila Cruz also shone with nine points and 15 digs.
Singh said the locals are slowly stepping up to help Tushova. Clemente echoed the sentiment, adding that the win was a total team effort.
“Nakaka-build din ng confidence yung panalo na to. Unexpected,” said Clemente.
“Mas eager talaga kaming this conference, kaya kailangan din talaga gutom pa rin kami hanggang dulo,” she added, comparing their debut performance in the All-Filipino where they only managed a single win in 11 matches.
After a lopsided opening set, Capital1 lost its steam and squandered a 24-23 second-set lead for Galeries Tower to tie it at one-set apiece.
The Solar Spikers slowly regained their composure in the ensuing frames particularly midway the fourth set, where they erased a 17-20 deficit by scoring eight of the last nine points courtesy of Tushova and Clemente.
Thai import Sutadta Chuewulim and Jewel Encarnacion scored 22 and 19 points for Galeries Tower, who skidded to their eighth straight loss in as many games.
