Lanao del Norte 1st district Rep. Khalid Dimaporo insisted on Tuesday, Aug. 20 that members of the House of Representatives--through the quad-committee (quad-comm)--were merely doing their job, and thus shouldn't be told by other people in government to do otherwise.
"I think it's wrong for statesmen to say, 'Wag kayong magtrabaho dyan because this is politically-motivated (Don't work because this is politically-motivated). No, we have to look into the institutional safeguards," Dimaporo said in a press conference at the House of Representatives.
The firebrand solon from Mindanao was reacting to criticisms made by Vice President Sara Duterte against the quad-comm.
The special four-way panel recently launched an investigation on the alleged interconnected issues of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), illegal drugs, and extrajudicial killings (EJK) during the previous Duterte administration's bloody war on drugs.
But Vice President Duterte said there were more pressing matters--like poverty and inflation--that the House should focus on.
This criticism didn't sit well with Dimaporo, as he underscored that the House was merely tackling the POGO problem, which had since branched out into other issues.
"The money [produced by POGOs] is not worth it in comparison to the societal ills that we are experiencing. That should have never reached this point. We should have our own institutional safeguards. So I think that's the first objective of quad-comm," Dimaporo said.
"There's not enough being done to stop the smuggling of illegal drugs into our country. That's another thing that the quad-comm is working on hand-in-hand with the issue of the POGOs," he added.
During its hearing last Friday, Aug. 16, the quad-comm heard the testimony from former Bureau of Customs (BOC) intelligence officer Jimmy Guban, who implicated former president Rodrigo Duterte's son, Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo "Pulong" Duterte; his son-in-law, lawyer Manases "Mans" Carpio; and his former economic adviser Michael Yang in the smuggling of billions worth of shabu hidden in magnetic lifters at the Manila International Container Port in 2018.
Carpio is Vice President Duterte's husband. He and Rep. Duterte have dismissed Guban's allegations, and called them "politically-motivated".
The Vice President herself described the actions of the quad-comm as "political harassment".
"We keep saying war on drugs. How many presidents had a war on drugs, pero hanggang ngayon, may pumapasok pang tons and tons of 'shabu' (but up to now, tons and tons of 'shabu' enter the country)? We need to identify the problems so we can find the solution.
"That's the job of Congress," Dimaporo said.
