QC gov’t expands scholarship opportunities for students

The Quezon City government announced on Friday, August 2, that it will provide higher financial grants to expand the scholarship program in the city.

“Hangad natin na mas paigtingin ang mga programa ng lungsod na may pang matagalang epekto sa buhay ng ating kabataan. Handog ng pagpapalawak ng kasalukuyang scholarship program ang iba-ibang oportunidad para sa libo-libong QCitizens na nagnanais makapag-aral o magbalik-eskwela (We are seeking to expand this program that will have a big impact on our youth. This will benefit thousands of QCitizens who want to continue their studies or go back to school). Providing more funds to our scholarship program is a necessary and sound investment for the city’s future,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

Through Ordinance No. SP-3283, the scholarship program for senior high school students has been broadened to include scholarship subcategories for academics, specialized tracks, athletics and the arts, and youth leadership, mirroring those at the tertiary level. The stipend for senior high school scholars will also increase significantly from P4,000 to P10,000 annually.

The stipend for tertiary scholars will also increase from P4,000 to P25,000 for academics, athletics, and arts, and youth leaders/scholars, while the stipend for continuing education and vocational course scholars has been raised from P6,000 to P10,000.

The introduction of the QC Excel Scholarship for tertiary students aims to cultivate a pool of young leaders and a workforce that will support local government initiatives. These scholars are composed of students who excel not only academically but also demonstrate leadership and active involvement in volunteer work and impactful activities that have social relevance.

The mayor urged QCitizens, particularly the aspiring scholars, to secure their QCitizen ID, as it is the primary requirement to avail of social services, including the city’s scholarship program.

The online application for new scholars will start on August 5, 2024.
