MUFG investing in Mynt, GCash now valued at $5 billion

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) and Ayala Corporation are acquiring fresh stakes in Globe Fintech Innovations, Inc. (Mynt), in a deal that more than doubled the valuation of the parent company of GCash to $5 billion (P286.4 billion) from $2 billion in 2021.

In disclosures to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Globe and parent company Ayala noted that MUFG is Japan’s largest banking group and one of the largest financial institutions globally while GCash is the Philippines’ number one finance super app and largest digital cashless ecosystem.

Through its wholly-owned subsidiary AC Ventures Holdings, Inc. (ACV), Ayala will increase its investments in Mynt to 13 percent by acquiring an additional 8 percent stake from existing shareholders of Mynt for P22.9 billion or P145.372 per share.

At the same time, MUFG, through its consolidated subsidiary, MUFG Bank, Ltd. will acquire an 8 percent stake after entering into binding agreements to invest in Mynt.

Ayala added that it is "currently in discussions with a strategic investor which has expressed interest in acquiring a portion of its ownership stake in Mynt subject to completing due diligence and receiving its approvals."

He noted that, “With our investment, we are excited to expand our contribution to the ongoing development of the Philippines’ digital economy and financial inclusion.”

Ayala said the proposed increased investment in Mynt is part of its initiative to reallocate capital to clear business winners.

The increased stake in Mynt allows Ayala to benefit from GCash’s strong long-term growth potential. The GCash platform, already dominant in the Philippines, has significant upside from untapped market opportunities.

Mynt has seen an unprecedented growth in its user base and transactions in the past four years, fueled by innovations and a keen focus on improving customer experience.

Aligned with its commitment towards financial inclusion, this fresh investment will further spark economic growth in the Philippines by unlocking financial services to Filipinos.

The proposed investment is subject to the execution of definitive transaction documents and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.
