President Marcos told journalists that now more than ever, the government needs their help in keeping the people informed and empower them in determining what are facts and what are only lies.

"In this time of unregulated social media, of fake news, [and] artificial intelligence, now more than ever, we need your help in empowering our people to distinguish the truth from fiction, and facts from blatant lies," Marcos told journalists in his speech during the oathtaking of the Association of the Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel Foundation Inc. Board of Trustees on Friday, Aug. 2.

Marcos recognized the invaluable role of a free press and a robust media in ensuring a vibrant and functioning Philippine democracy, stressing that the media "keep our people informed of important news and current events, ensuring that there is a healthy, and enlightened, meaningful discourse on matters of public importance."

'You hold us accountable for our actions'

The President also underscored during the oathtaking the crucial role of journalists in keeping government leaders, including himself, accountable for their actions.

"You likewise help in holding public officers, including myself, accountable for our actions—recognizing our work when we do well, and pointing out shortcomings whenever our work does not measure up to our sworn duties," he said.

Marcos urged the journalists to continue upholding the integrity of their profession "by ensuring that practitioners live up to the highest ethical and professional standards of journalism."

He also encouraged them to continue practicing courageous, compassionate, and committed journalism.

He vowed that his administration will continue to ensure the safety and welfare of all media workers and practitioners through the Presidential Task Force on Media Security.

"We will also foster an environment where members of the media can continue to freely practice their profession in a manner that is fruitful, rewarding, and meaningful," the Chief Executive said.

Samahang Plaridel is an association of media practitioners and communications specialists founded in 2003 by veteran journalists with at least 20 years of experience.

The Association aims to uphold the fundamental freedom of the press, promote the dignity of the journalism profession and foster camaraderie, cooperation and understanding among journalists.

It also works towards advancing the profession by advocating Marcelo H. del Pilar's principles of truth, fairness and impartiality as enshrined in democratic values, which are essential for a society that is acceptable to all Filipinos.
