The Tanduay Rum Festival kicked off its fourth year in Bacolod City on Saturday, August 17, 2024.

This year's festival marks a significant milestone for Tanduay, celebrating its 170th anniversary and continued dominance in the rum market, having surpassed Bacardi in sales since 2019.

The festival, a prelude to the renowned Masskara Festival, has become a major draw for tourists, significantly contributing to Bacolod City's thriving tourism industry.

In 2023, the city welcomed a record-breaking 780,000 tourists, generating P7 billion in local receipts. Mayor Albee Benitez, a staunch supporter of the festival, highlighted its role in promoting Bacolod's rich heritage and culture. "The Rum Festival is a testament to our city's unique identity, showcasing our local music, arts, and, of course, our beloved rum," said Mayor Benitez.

He also emphasized the festival's contribution to the local economy, noting that Bacolod City generates P4.2 billion annually from the sugarcane industry, tourism, and real estate.

This year's festival features a diverse lineup of activities, including a food park night market, a mixology and flairtending competition, a culinary competition, a distillery tour, and a rum masterclass. The festival will also showcase live performances by renowned artists, with Juan Karlos "JK" Labajo headlining the 2024 edition.

"Bacolod is the only city in the Philippines with a dedicated rum festival, and it's not just for Tanduay but for all distilleries," Mayor Benitez explained, highlighting the abundance of sugarcane on Negros Island. He also noted the city's high rum consumption, particularly when paired with Bacolod's famous inasal chicken.

The opening ceremonies were graced by Atty. Carlos Luis Fernandez, PAL OIC/EVP-General Counsel, who joined Mayor Benitez in expressing enthusiasm for the festival's continued success. Both officials emphasized the festival's importance in promoting Bacolod City as a safe and welcoming destination for tourists.

Mayor Benitez addressed concerns about recent false information regarding kidnappings in the city, assuring visitors that the city government is actively investigating these claims.

With its vibrant atmosphere, unique cultural experiences, and diverse activities, the Tanduay Rum Festival is poised to attract even larger crowds in the coming days, further solidifying Bacolod City's position as a premier tourist destination in the Philippines.
