Manila to set up sports excellence programs, centers at city-run schools, universities

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan said the city government will work on providing technical expertise for the identification and training of young athletes in city-run elementary schools, junior and senior high schools and universities.

The mayor vowed to work on the needs and priorities of teachers and sports coaches in the city's public and private schools in Manila. 

Mayor Lacuna-Pangan said they will start in the schools where the two-time Olympics gold medalist Carlos Yulo graduated.

"Tingnan natin kung feasible na makapag-designate tayo ng isang Sports Excellence Center sa bawat distrito ng Maynila (Let's see if it is feasible to build a Sports Excellence Center in every city's district)” she said.

She also invited sports coaches and athletes to enroll in any of the degree programs on physical therapy, nursing, medicine, public health, and education at the city-funded university, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

She highlighted the university's available undergraduate and masters degree programs directly related to sports careers, as well as in other careers, that are of interest to athletes and coaches. 

"Pwede silang mag-enroll sa PLM para sa kanilang professional development at economic advancement (They are welcome to enroll at PLM for their professional development and economic advancement),” the mayor said.


Lacuna-Pangan added that she will explore with the university's management and its experts the execution of a Sports Excellence Program.
 
“Mangangalap tayo ng mga datos para malaman kung alin sa mga paaralan dito sa Maynila ang may track record na ng pagiging mahusay sa Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy, at Palarong Pambansa (We will gather data to find out which of the schools here in Manila already have a track record of excelling in the Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy, and Palarong Pambansa),” she added.
 
The local chief executive said they will adopt an evidence-based approach to help Manila schools and its students to ensure the limited funds available are targeted where they can produce the most and best results.


She stressed that the goal of sports programs is to accompany the Manileño athletes on their sports journey and not just wait at the end when they win medals. 

"Our aim is to be present during those tough moments when they need help the most,” she emphasized.
 
Last week, the mayor also recognized the accomplishments of Manileño athletes who excelled in the Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy competitions, and Palarong Pambansa.
