Coach Pat, Animam proud of Gilas stand vs Brazil

In fact, the longtime national team mentor was very much pleased with Gilas’ performance, only losing by three points, 77-74, despite playing in their first foray outside the FIBA Asia borders and against a Top 10 team in the world.

“We are the underdog here. I think the girls fought with heart. With a big heart. That's what Gilas stands for so I think we have to really work harder in the succeeding games,” said Aquino after the game.

The Filipinas surprisingly held their ground against the fancied Brazilians, even taking a seven-point lead in the opening frame. Gilas also overcame a huge 13-0 blast from their opponents and stayed within striking distance all throughout.

Gilas even had the lead midway through the fourth, 69-68, after a booming triple from Naomi Panganiban. The Nationals had several chances to get the win in the waning minutes but missed their chances including the potential go-ahead triple from Khate Castillo with two seconds left.

“That was a great play. It was a great execution. Just sorely missed that shot but still proud of the girls for doing their best. I think more often than not I think the mindset is that they can play and they belong. We hope to continue that mindset and hopefully get a win,” added Aquino.

Gilas center Jack Animam also shared the sentiments saying that while it was a tough loss, it was certainly a huge momentum boost for the Nationals who are only ranked 40th in the world.

“It's a tough loss but personally as a player I dont think  it's a loss for us,” said Animam.

“We are such a young team. Our team's average age is 20 below but to be here, and to see them play like that, on one of the biggest stages and against one of the top 10 teams in the world. I couldn't be more proud,” he added.
