Sen. Robin Padilla apologizes over 'sexual rights' remark

Senator Robinhood Padilla has apologized after drawing criticism for his statement during a recent Senate hearing.

“Sa mga na-offend po o hindi nagustuhan ang aming pagdinig patungkol sa marital rape, mga kababayan paumanhin po,” the actor posted on Facebook.

He explained, “Para din po sa inyong kaalaman ang aking committee po ay public information. Ito pong Committee na ito sa matagal na panahon ay tulog, hindi po ito nagagamit ng tama kahit nasa constitution ang public information.”

According to the lawmaker, this is very much what prompted him to do his best to inform and educate as many citizens as possible relating the same.

“Dahil ang batas ang proteksyon ng tao kung hindi ito napalaganap, ito ay palamuti lang at maaring makabiktima ng ignorante,” he said.

He added, “Gumagawa po tayo ng mga panukalang batas na magiging bunga ng ating mga pagdinig. ‘Wag po tayo maging sensitive sa pagdinig sapagkat ‘yun po ang ibig sabihin ng hearing.”

The senator explained further, “Ang aking pong isinasagawang mga pagdinig, sa aking bawat hearing walang pinakamahalaga kundi ang pagtatanong upang makakuha ng information dahil ang committee ko po ay committee of public information.”

He said, “Tandaan po natin ang well-informed na bayan ay progresibo.”  

It will be recalled that on Thursday, August 15, the senator led the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media and discussed the issues of rape, sexual abuse and harassment.
