Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas still has a lot of things to say to Senator Robin Padilla even after he apologized for his hot take about sex and consent among married couples.
Brosas, in a statement Saturday, Aug. 17, called Padilla's apology a "non-apology" and instead asked him to attend anti-violence against women and children (VAWC) seminars to "educate himself on women's rights".
"Paalala lang muli kay Senator Padilla na hindi sexual objects ang kababaihan at walang excuse o batas na dapat gamitin upang baliwalain ang consent sa pagitan ng magka-relasyon o mag-asawa," Brosas said.
(A repeated reminder to Senator Padilla: women are not sexual objects and there's no excuse or law that can be used to dismiss consent between people in a relationship or marriage.)
"His claim that men have sexual rights simply because they're 'in heat,' likening them to dogs, is a troubling reinforcement of macho-patriarchal views. Perhaps it's time for him to sit, stay, and educate himself on women's rights," said the Makabayan congresswoman.
Gabriela Party-list emphasized the alarming nature of Padilla' statements, especially from someone in a position to influence national laws.
In an obvious jab, Brosas noted that the senator recently indicated plans to file a resolution on alleged abuses by the New People's Army (NPA), implicating Gabriela members.
Brosas urged Padilla to widen the investigation to include rampant cases of rape and sexual violence perpetrated by men in uniform in rural areas.
"Dapat yang tutukan ng mga mambabatas (Lawmakers should focus on this)," she said.
She further advised the action movie star-turned-senator to "issue a genuine public apology and commit to understanding the plight of women and other marginalized sectors".
"Dapat maalam ang mga mababatas hinggil sa karapatang pantao, at hindi tagapagtaguyod ng maling impormasyon," the militant lawmaker concluded.
