With the International Olympic Committee finally giving the green light to the creation of the Olympic Esports Games during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris last month, PESO is already preparing as early as now to ensure that the country will be sending its best esports athletes to the Olympiad.
Except that the Esports Olympics is set in Saudi Arabia in 2025, details of the inaugural competition, including the number and the kind of games titles that are to be played, remain scarce.
As it stands, the Esports Olympic Games is set to become a standalone event similar to the Paralympic Games and the Winter Olympics at least for the next three editions after Saudi Arabia and IOC agreed to a 12-year deal.
But for PESO, it is bracing for all the possibilities.
“It’s more of the mindset and preparations like building the esports facility, making sure na Olympic level na tayo. We need to coordinate with different government agencies because going into Olympics is a new thing to us,” said PESO executive director Marlon Marcelo during the MPL Philippines Season 14 pre-season press conference recently.
“This is like from SEA Games, Asian Games ‘yung jump niya is really, really high and everyone will be gunning for the medal. Walang bansa na hindi lalaban dito sa esports lalo na kung may shot ka for glory for the first time ever,” he added
While the country is known as hotbed for world-class esports talents, Marcelo said he feels that the country’s best chances of bagging a gold medal in the Olympics
“On the what kind of titles will it be, it’s still under wraps but PESO is going all in sa mobile. Ang laking tyansa natin. We cannot miss this opportunity for the first time so mas malapit, mas malapit ang medalya natin ngayon sa esports,” said Marcelo.
PH teams, both club and national teams, are particularly dominant in the world stage in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. As it stands, the country has four of the five M-series World Championship titles, three Mid-Season Cup titles, one IESF world esports championship title and three Southeast Asian Games gold medals.
