With the major success of the gymnastics program in the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics courtesy of the two-gold haul of Carlos Yulo, big plans are already in the pipeline to sustain the momentum toward the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
According to Gymnastics Association of the Philippines President Cynthia Carrion, they are planning to exert all efforts to bring together Carlos and his younger brother, Eldrew, in the men’s artistic gymnastics of the next Summer Games.
“I’m gonna have a team this time, I’m setting up a men’s and women’s team,” said Carrion in an interview with Radyo Pilipinas 2.
If the stars align, they will be the first brothers from the Philippines to participate at the same time in the Summer Games.
Though the goal is clear four years from now, the possibility of seeing the Yulo brothers in international competition will not happen in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
Gymnastics only allows male athletes aged 18 and above to participate in the SEA Games. Female athletes, meanwhile, can join the competition as young as 16 years old.
With that, Elaiza Yulo could be joining his older brother Carlos in Bangkok next year.
Aside from younger Eldrew and Miguel Besana, Carrion is in talks with Jake Jarman, who bagged the bronze medal in the floor exercise, to complete the men’s team in the City of Angels.
“For sure, the lineup will be Carlos, Eldrew, I’ll try to get Jake Jarman from Great Britain, Miguel [Besana], just make sure we have one or two good ones from here,” she added.
But Carrion must convince Jarman and his mom Anna, who traces her roots from Cebu, to have an agreement before the gymnast could don the national colors.
“We have prepared [letters], I have to talk to his mother if she agrees and Jake, himself, if he agrees,” Carrion continued.
