1,500 supporters witness homecoming parade for Filipino Olympians

Around 1,500 supporters welcomed Olympic double gold medalist Carlos Yulo and other Filipino Olympians as they waived Philippine flags during the grand homecoming parade for the athletes on Wednesday, August 14.
Over 300 Manila Police District (MPD) were deployed along the parade route to ensure the security in the area.
The "Hero’s Welcome" parade proceeded through the City of Manila at around 4:12 p.m.
According to the Manila police, they also conducted paneling within the vicinity of Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) where 25,000 supporters attended to see the Filipino Olympians.
At about 3:17 p.m., Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan arrived at the RMSC.
"Asahan niyo po na mas marami pa po tayong medalya makukuha sa mga susunod na taon. Maraming maraming salamat po sa suporta niyo (We will get many medals in the coming years. Thank you very much for your support)," Yulo said in his speech at RMSC.
Lacuna-Pangan said the P2-million worth of cash incentives to Yulo will be given on Monday, August 19.

The lady mayor also awarded P500,000 cash incentives to Olympian pole vaulter Ernest John "EJ" Obiena at the Mayor's Office on Thursday, August 15.
The City of Manila appreciates and honors Obiena's remarkable achievements in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“EJ, mahal ka namin dito sa Magnificent Manila (EJ, we love you here in Manila),” Lacuna-Pangan said.
Obiena, a proud Manileño from Tondo and a University of Santo Tomas (UST) alumnus like Mayor Lacuna, achieved a career-best 4th place finish in the men's pole vault event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, clearing a height of 5.90 meters.
This marked a significant improvement from his 11th place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
"We congratulate Ernest John Obiena on his best Olympics finish so far in his still young athletics career. The 4th place finish was his best effort at that high-pressure moment," said Mayor Lacuna.
"Our Manileño pole vaulter from Tondo and fellow Thomasian is proudly and joyfully welcomed in the country’s capital now that he is back home with his family, friends, and neighbors."
Mayor Lacuna also praised Obiena for his sportsmanship, particularly in acknowledging the new world and Olympic records set by Sweden’s Armand Duplantis during the event.
"EJ Obiena gave us and the world a thrilling performance as he cleared bar after raised bar. It was not meant to be now. But our hearts were filled with pride for the sportsmanship EJ showed as he applauded, along with the tens of thousands in the stadium, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis' new world record and new Olympic record of 6.25 meters,” she remarked.
Before Obiena's departure for another international trip, Lacuna-Pangan extended her gratitude and best wishes to Obiena, expressing how much the City of Manila values his contributions to Philippine sports.
"Isa kang Bayaning Manileño, EJ. Mahal ka namin dito sa Magnificent Manila," the mayor added.
