Filipinos from all corners of the world rejoice in the triumphant Olympic journey of our Philippine Team in the recently concluded Paris Olympics. Carlos Yulo, Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, along with 19 other Filipino athletes, once again showcased to the world the unique brand of Filipino athleticism and sportsmanship. Once again, we have etched our own indelible mark in the history of international sports.

Not only was a heroes’ welcome for our Filipino Olympians fitting, but it was also absolutely necessary. Having fought with all strength, pure hearts, and hopeful spirits, our athletes in the Paris Olympic have added a deeper meaning to our time cherished value of patriotism. Having fought for God and nation even in the midst of seemingly insurmountable odds, these Filipino athletes deserve no less than our highest regard and admiration.

While the Paris Olympics medal haul for the Philippines equaled that of our total in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, we take special pride in our victory in Paris having claimed two gold medals courtesy of exceptional Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo. Carlos Yulo’s name will forever be remembered in Philippine sports history as the first ever Filipino athlete to win two gold medals in one Olympic meet. Indeed, he has stirred remarkable interest in gymnastics among young Filipinos and inspired budding athletes to also work hard and train hard to become the best in the Philippines and the best in the world. Carlos Yulo has shown how patience, discipline, hard work, passion and commitment can be truly rewarding.

What was likewise a vital support force while our Olympians competed in Paris was our Filipino community there. Their heartwarming cheers, how proudly they waved our Philippine flaglets, how they took time to wait even outside the games venues and the Olympic village just to cheer and congratulate our athletes were indeed inspiring gestures that sustained the whole Philippine team in their historic quest in the Paris Olympics.

I congratulate the whole Philippine Team that brought great joy and immense pride to our nation — athletes, coaches, trainers, Philippine sports officials. Ikinararangal kayo ng sambayanang Pilipino! Mabuhay ang mga atletang Pinoy!
