This was disclosed by the special investigation task group (SITG) created to solve the twin robberies after the suspected getaway vehicle was discovered to be owned by a police master sergeant assigned in Metro Manila.
The police officer was on leave when the robbers struck Macy’s Gold and Silver Jewelry Store and DGC D’ Gold Chain and Jewelry Store on August 8.
The policeman is just one of the persons of interest in the case, said Police Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, spokesperson of the SITG.
“We are preparing cases for these people so let’s see where the evidence will lead," said Macatangay in a press briefing at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) headquarters on Wednesday morning, August 14.
The suspected getaway vehicle, a silver and grey Mitsubishi Adventure, was recovered on Tuesday night, August 13, in Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City.
The Carbon Police Station and Mandaue City Police Office arrested the driver of the SUV identified as Marcial Ponesto, a native of Lanao del Norte and resident of Barangay Pagsabungan, Mandaue.
Ponesto tried to escape but police eventually cornered. A hand grenade was recovered inside the SUV, police said.
The SUV was the same vehicle being boarded by a group of men after the robbery as shown in a security camera footage.
Motorcycle-riding men believed to be the robbers were seen transferring to the SUV.
Four of the suspects have been identified. The culprits are members of the Mindanao-based Parojinog Robbery Group, Macatangay said.
Two of the suspects are believed to be still in Cebu.
Macatangay added five other persons who have been living in Cebu but are natives of Mindanao are also involved in the crime.
The suspects are believed to be led by a mastermind, Macatangay said.
Necessary documents are still being prepared for the filing of charges against the robbers, Macatangay said.
Macatangay opted not to comment when asked if it is still possible to recover the stolen jewelry when it has been almost a week since the daylight robbery took place.
Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia here was pleased when he visited the CCPO headquarters on Wednesday morning.
“First of all, I would like to commend Cebu City Police Office for this breakthrough in this case,” Garcia said.
Garcia said the CCPO, led by acting chief Police Col. Antonietto Cañete, has been working non-stop that resulted in the recovery of the getaway vehicle.
He urged the CCPO to continue its investigation until the perpetrators are located.
“Of course, we are still doing more and more investigations so that we can be able to find the other perpetrators of this crime,” Garcia said.
