Cindai Cilik Tari: the youth dance group of the Embassy of Malaysia

The children of the embassy, affectionately known as such, begin their life journey in the Philippines upon arrival. Adjusting to new schools, friends, language, and culture is a common experience for third-culture kids. Their ages range from babies to 19 years old. Their presence at events fill the space with laughter, running steps, and inevitably, tears. They are inspired by traditional dances led by Azlinda Alias, fondly known as Sis Linda.

As the spouse of Superintendent Norazman Hassan Basari and a qualified traditional dance teacher, Sis Linda seized the opportunity to invite other embassy spouses and officers to volunteer their children and formed Seri Cindai Tari. They started performing at two embassy events, sparked by the idea to replicate their debut effort during a recent school performance at Fountain International School on Oct. 14, 2022. Later, another adorable team for the younger children was formed and known as Cindai Cilik Tari.

Being nomadic third-culture kids has helped bridge gaps between their current home and their passport country. These experiences have shaped their characters to appreciate diverse cultures from the countries they've lived in while cherishing the traditions they've
left behind. Importantly, it instills patriotism, a sentiment they carry wherever they go.

The troupe has performed during the Malaysian Prime Minister’s visit to Rumah Malaysia, Asian Eats at Shangri-La Hotel EDSA event, ASEAN Food Festival, Malaysia Week, and “Celebrating 60 years of Malaysia and the Philippines Diplomatic Relation” gala dinner.

These achievements were made possible with the support of Ambassador Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony of the Embassy of Malaysia, the Embassy of Malaysia office, and the Ladies Association of the Embassy.

This month, most of the boys and girls will be leaving Manila as their parents end their tour of duty but hopefully, they will take the memories created here in the Philippines wherever life will take them next.
