House hails Philippine delegation to Paris Olympics; confers Medal of Distinction to bronze medalists

The House of Representatives has successively adopted three resolutions congratulating and commending the medal-winning athletes and the entire Philippine delegation for their “phenomenal and historic performance” during the just-concluded  2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

The House also conferred the Congressional Medal of Distinction to bronze medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, who won in the 57-kilogram boxing and the 50-kilogram boxing event, respectively.

On Monday, Aug. 12, the lower chamber adopted House Resolution (HR) No. 1915 and HR No. 1916 to honor both boxers with the same distinction.

HR No. 1917, which seeks to honor all 22 Filipino athletes who competed in nine different sporting events in the just-concluded Olympics, was similarly adopted by the chamber.

The three resolutions were authored by Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Senior Deputy Speaker Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr., Deputy Speaker Rep. David “Jay-jay” Suarez, Majority Leader Manuel Jose “Mannix” Dalipe, Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan, Senior Deputy Majority Leader Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” A. Marcos III, and Reps. Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre of Tingog Party-list.

“In a stunning display of exceptional strength, discipline, and perseverance, the Filipino athletes and their respective coaches and trainers led the Philippines to a spectacular 2024 Paris Summer Olympic finish, ranking first among all Southeast Asian countries and 37th all over the world,” the authors said in HR No. 1917.

“This year’s triumph stands out as the most impressive finish in the country’s Olympic history, bringing immense pride and joy to the whole nation, uniting the country in celebration, and earning the respect and admiration not only of fellow Filipinos but also citizens of other Southeast Asian nations,” the resolution read.

Speaker Romualdez and his colleagues acknowledged that the four-medal haul of the Paris Olympics surpassed that of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with the two gold medals secured by Carlos Yulo for floor exercise and vault events in men’s artistic gymnastics, alongside the two bronze medals.

Yulo, in particular, was described as having accomplished “what no other Filipino athlete has achieved” with his near-perfect routines that made him the first-ever double Olympic gold medalist in the country’s storied sporting history.

Last week, the House adopted HR No. 1864 in consolidation with other resolutions conferring Yulo the Congressional Medal of Excellence.

The distinction is the highest award given to Filipino achievers in sports, business, medicine, science and arts and culture.

The resolution also lauded the Filipino Olympians who reached the medal round in their respective sports. Namely, EJ Obiena, who ranked 4th in men’s pole vault; Bianca Pagdanganan, who placed 4th in women’s individual stroke play in golf; and Elreen Ann Ando, who ranked 6th in women’s 59-kg weightlifting.
