House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Monday, Aug. 12, extended his congratulations to Filipino athletes who nearly made a podium finish at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, namely EJ Obiena and Bianca Pagdanganan.
In a statement, Romualdez lauded the efforts of the two atheletes for giving their best in their respective competitions, inspiring millions of Filipinos with their perseverance in the process.
Obiena, who is currently ranked world’s number two in men’s pole vault, narrowly missed a bronze medal by missing all of his three tries at clearing 5.95 meters.
Pagdanganan was in the fourth spot as well, finishing just outside contention with a 6-under par total in the Women’s Golf competition.
“The entire nation stands proud of our athletes. You have lifted the Filipino spirit and proven that with hard work, discipline, and the support of the Filipino people, we can achieve greatness on the world stage,” said Romualdez.
The House leader also commended the Filipino athletes who competed during the just-concluded Paris Olympics.
“Your hard work, dedication, and commitment have brought honor to our nation. Qualifying for the Olympics is already an extraordinary achievement, and you have shown the world the strength and resilience of the Filipino spirit,” he added.
Romualdez further lauded the medal-winning bets of the country for making their mark on the global stage.
“Carlos Yulo's victories, who earned two Gold medals in gymnastics and a bronze medal each from Filipina boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, have made our nation proud, and we celebrate this momentous achievement,” he said.
With four medals in the bag, the Philippines finished 37th in the world.
For Romualdez, this remarkable feat reflects the “indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication of our athletes”.
“This historic finish is a testament to the progress and potential of Philippine sports,” the Speaker noted. “It highlights the importance of continued support for our athletes, who have brought honor to our country”.
“Let this be the beginning of even greater successes in the future,” he stressed.
