Members of the "Young Guns" bloc in the House of Representatives are calling for the conduct of a survey that would reveal whether elected officials are pro-Philippines or pro-China.
House Assistant Majority Leaders Reps. Jil Bongalon (Ako-Biicol Party-list), Zia Alonto Adiong (Lanao del Sur) and Paolo Ortega V (La Union) made this pitch Monday, Aug. 12 during a press conference.
They did so amid the latest aggressive action of China in the West Philippine Sea (WPS)
"Dahil napapag-usapan naman po ito, dapat may survey din sa mga public officials. Tatanungin po kami kung kami po ba ay pro-Pilipinas o pro-China," Bongalon said rather tongue-in-cheek.
(Since this being discussed, there should be a survey on public officials. We should be asked whether we are pro-Philippines or pro-China.)
Showing that he was serious with his suggestion, Bongalon added: "At dapat i-disclose kung ano po ang sagot namin sa survey. Dun natin malalaman kung saan po siya."
(And our answers to the survey must be disclosed. Through this we will find out their stand.)
Asked who he thought should carry out such survey, the Bicolano said that any "credible [and] independent survey platform" would do".
Adiong supported Bongalon's idea even as he expressed frustration over so-called "China enablers and apologists" in the Philippines.
"Magpa-survey na nga kaya tayo? Sino ba ang pro-China at pro-Pilipinas? Adiong said.
(Why don't we have that survey? Who is pro-China and who is pro-Philippines?)
"Kasi unfortunately, sa ating society ngayon, may mga enablers pa rin, may mga nagsasabing...parang pabor pa sila sa ginagawa ng China, mga apologists ng China," he vented.
(Because unfortunately, in our society, there are still enablers, there are those who say...it's like they are in favor of what China is doing, they are apologists of China.)
For his part, Ortega concurred with his colleagues by simply saying, "Mabuhay ang mga tunay na Pilipino (Long live the true Filipinos)."
“Lahat naman tayo dito mahal natin ang Pilipinas. Dapat Filipino ang kampihan, dapat pro-‘Pinas tayo,” Ortega added.
(All of us here love the Philippines. We should side with Filipinos, we should be pro-Philippines.)
