PAGASA: LPA east of N. Luzon may become a tropical depression, but no direct impact expected
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has monitored a low pressure area (LPA) east of northern Luzon on Monday, Aug. 12, which may develop into a tropical depression within the day.
PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said the LPA was located 1,375 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon, within the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), as of 3 a.m.
Badrina said there is a high chance that the LPA could develop into a tropical depression and is likely to exit the PAR.
If it becomes a tropical depression within the PAR, it will be given the name “Dindo.”
However, Badrina said PAGASA does not expect the weather disturbance to have a direct impact or enhance the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat.”
In the next 24 hours, the habagat may continue to affect parts of Luzon and Visayas.
Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Bataan may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms.
PAGASA warned of potential flash floods or landslides during moderate to heavy rains in these areas.
Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the habagat may also affect Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Western Visayas, and Negros Island Region.
Similar conditions are expected in the rest of the country due to localized thunderstorms.
The public is also warned of possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
