Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua wondered out loud what Vice President Sara Duterte's stance is on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue.
This, as Chua denied on Saturday, Aug. 10 the Vice President's allegation that the Marcos administration was allowing foreign intervention to a certain extent on certain issues.
“So, until now, hindi pa rin po natin alam kung ano po ang stand ng ating Pangalawang Pangulo, pagdating po sa isyu o usapin ng West Philippine Sea,” the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) stalwart said during a news forum in Quezon City.
(So, until now, we still don't know the stand of our Vice President, when it comes to the issue on the West Philippine Sea.)
Recent months have seen heightened tension in the WPS between the Philippines and regional power China.
The escalation of tension is mostly due to the Chinese Coast Guard's (CCG) blocking and harassment of Philippine boats that do resupply missions for Filipino soldiers aboard BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungjn Shoal.
In this regard, Chua says Vice President Duterte's tirade against President Marcos is "surprising".
“Actually iyon nga rin iyong kinagulat ko, dahil ang isa po sa batikos niya sa ating Pangulo ay iyong sa mga foreign … pakikialaman daw ng dayuhan. Ang alam ko lamang po na isyu ngayon sa atin na may foreign… is iyong China,” he said.
(Actually that's what surprised me, because one of her criticism against our President is on the foreign...that foreigners are intervening. The only issue I know wherein foreigners are involved...is the Chuna issue.)
Vice President Duterte is the eldest daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte. The latter's administration, which lasted from 2016 to 2022, was known for its "pivot" to China.
