Proclamation No. 649 was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin with the authority of President Marcos on Aug. 8.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of San Juan be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration,” the proclamation read.
Also called the Battle of San Juan del Monte, the Battle of Pinaglabanan took place on Aug. 30, 1896 and is considered as the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution between members of the Katipunan and the Spanish Guardia Civil.
Led by Gat. Andres Bonifacio, the Katipunan attacked San Juan del Monte because of its two strategic locations: the El Polvorin gun powder depot and El Deposito water reservoir.
The five-hectare-wide Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan City recognizes the historical significance of the Battle of Pinaglabanan and features a "Spirit of Pinaglabanan" monument, which includes that of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, Gen. Emilio Jacinto, and Bonifacio.
