No tsunami threat after 6.8-magnitude quake in Sea of Okhotsk — Phivolcs
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) did not detect a tsunami threat to the country following a strong earthquake that struck the Sea of Okhotsk on Saturday, Aug. 10.

In an advisory, Phivolcs stated that a magnitude 6.8 quake hit the Sea of Okhotsk, which is located between Russia and Japan, at 11:28 a.m.
“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said. “No action [is] required,” it added.
Tsunamis, Phivolcs explained, refer to a series of sea waves typically caused by undersea earthquakes and can exceed heights of five meters.
Phivolcs also clarified that tsunamis are often incorrectly referred to as tidal waves and are sometimes confused with storm surges.
