62,000 crime suspects nabbed in Central Visayas in 2 years

CEBU CITY – The anti-crime campaign in Region 7 has been unrelenting, and, as a result, more than 62,000 crime suspects were arrested in the past two years, the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) reported.

The PRO-7 said that from June 30, 2022 to July 31, 2024, 62,347 individuals were arrested for various offenses.

During the two-year period, 14,033 anti-illegal drug operations were conducted, leading to the arrest of 17,059 drug personalities and confiscation of 369,698.90 grams of shabu and 270,956.42 grams of marijuana with a combined value of P2,546,959,490.40.

Police Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin said that since he took over as chief of PRO-7, seized illegal drugs worth P1,205,535,448.98 have been destroyed in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas.

The destruction of illegal drugs was a way of showing the public that PRO-7 is serious in its campaign against illegal drugs and that allegations that seized illegal drugs are being recycled are baseless, Aberin said.

A total of 14,643 anti-illegal operations were conducted in the past two years that resulted in the arrest of 27,651 individuals.

In the campaign against loose firearms, 11,244 unlicensed guns were seized while 1,973 persons were arrested in 10,409 operations.

Aberin added that 15,664 wanted persons have been arrested, with 2,206 of them considered as most wanted persons.

“We are serious in our campaign against all forms of criminality. It will be a relentless campaign. As a matter of fact, we have our simultaneous anti-criminality and law enforcement operations, it’s thrice a month in which all our personnel, all our units will run after wanted persons, loose firearms and drug personalities for three straight days,” said Aberin.

As a result of of the intensified drug campaign, 71 percent of the total barangays in Central Visayas have been declared as drug-declared, Aberin said.
