In a recent media interview, Councilor Em Ang, chairperson of the City Council Committee on History, Culture, and Arts, said the local government is collaborating with owners for the restoration.
The city council has passed a resolution authored by Ang declaring Yulo’s Park as an important cultural property and historical landmark.
Ang said that Yulo’s Park has been granted a National Heritage marker by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2017. The marker will be unveiled on August 22, she added.
A resolution stated that Yulo's Park was built by the late statesman, Don Mariano Yulo, on August 10, 1919, and is 105-years-old on Saturday, August 10.
Yulo was governor of Negros Occidental and eventually a senator during the Commonwealth period. His son, Alfredo C. Yulo, was a former mayor of Bacolod City from May 27, 1940 to May 29, 1942, the resolution said.
Then President Manuel L. Quezon was honored in a dinner at Yulo's Park where drinking glasses were specially painted with the Philippine flag as a show of nationalism and prelude to Philippine independence, the resolution added.
The city council recognizes the importance of preserving cultural and historical heritage in accordance with the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009 or Republic Act 10066, the resolution said.
Ang said that Yulo’s Park is also tentatively listed in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization site pending this city’s compliance with several requirements.
She said they have deployed personnel from different government offices, including the City Tourism Office, City Engineering Office, and the General Services Office, to help in the repair and cleanup of the site for the unveiling.
